How to Take a Full Backup Using the cPanel Backup App

Regular backups are important for the smooth running of your website and email hosting. At Cheap Host, customers have access to the default cPanel backup tools, and we also run remote backups using JetBackup.

Important: This guide focuses on the default backup tools inside cPanel. If you need help restoring a full account backup, please contact support, as this requires server-level access.

How to Download a Full Backup

Firstly, log in to cPanel either through the Client Area or using the login details from your New Account Information email.

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Go to the Files section.
  3. Select Backup.

From the Backup screen, click Download a Full Account Backup. This will create a copy of all files, databases and emails in your hosting account.

Alternatively, if you only need certain parts of your account, you can choose from the partial backup options.

  • Partial Backups - Home Directory
  • Download a MySQL Database Backup
  • Download Email Forwarders
  • Download Email Filters

To create a full backup, click Download a Full Account Backup.

Choosing a Backup Destination

cPanel will then give you several different backup destination options:

  • Home Directory
  • Remote FTP Server
  • Remote FTP Server using passive mode transfer
  • Secure Copy - SCP

If you choose any option other than Home Directory, you will need to enter the remote destination details. This may include the remote server, remote user, remote password, port and remote directory.

If you want to download the backup locally, select Home Directory and enter an email address so cPanel can notify you once the backup has completed.

Tip: Once you receive the completion email, refresh the same cPanel Backup page. You should then see a link to the backup file, which you can download to your local computer.

How to Download a Full Backup Using Backup Wizard

The process is very similar when using the cPanel Backup Wizard.

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Go to the Files section.
  3. Select Backup Wizard.

How to Restore a Full Account Backup

If you need to restore a full account backup, you will need to contact the Cheap Host support team. Restoring a full cPanel account backup requires root-level privileges.

Please open a support ticket and provide the filename of the backup you want restored. Our team can then review this and action the restore on your behalf.

Inadequate Disk Space to Perform a Full Backup

If you are using one of our smaller hosting packages and do not have enough disk space available to create the backup, please contact our support team.

In some cases, we can temporarily increase your disk space to allow you to carry out a full account backup.

Couldn’t Write to Remote File: Failure

If you receive a Couldn’t Write to Remote File: Failure message when trying to complete a full backup to a remote server, this is usually caused by either a disk space issue or a permissions problem on the remote destination.

Tip: Check that the remote server has enough free disk space, that the FTP/SCP login details are correct, and that the remote directory has the correct write permissions.
