Understanding Resource Usage (CloudLinux – cPanel & DirectAdmin)
If your website is hosted on a CloudLinux server, your account has allocated resources to ensure fair usage and stable performance for all users.
What is CloudLinux?
CloudLinux is an operating system used on shared hosting servers that isolates each account and assigns resource limits such as CPU, memory, and processes.
Common Resource Limits
Your hosting account may be limited by:
- CPU (Processor Usage): How much processing power your site can use
- Memory (RAM): The amount of memory available to your account
- Entry Processes (EP): Number of simultaneous web requests
- Number of Processes (NPROC): Total processes running under your account
- I/O (Disk Speed): How fast data can be read/written
If these limits are reached, your website may slow down or temporarily show errors (such as 508 Resource Limit Reached).
Viewing Resource Usage in cPanel
In cPanel, you can monitor usage via:
- Metrics → Resource Usage
- Click “Details” to view graphs and recent activity
This shows if your account has hit any limits and when.
Viewing Resource Usage in DirectAdmin
In DirectAdmin, resource usage is typically available under:
- System Info & Files → Resource Usage (location may vary slightly)
Some servers may also include a CloudLinux or LVE Manager icon showing detailed statistics.
What Causes High Resource Usage?
Common causes include:
- High website traffic
- Poorly optimised plugins or themes (especially on WordPress)
- Background scripts or cron jobs
- Bots or malicious traffic
- Inefficient database queries
How to Reduce Usage
- Optimise your website (cache, optimise images, reduce plugins)
- Enable caching (e.g. LiteSpeed Cache)
- Block unwanted bots or traffic
- Upgrade your hosting plan if needed
Summary
CloudLinux helps keep servers stable by limiting each account’s resource usage. Monitoring your usage regularly can help prevent slow performance or temporary errors.
If you frequently hit limits, contact support with details of your domain and we can help review your usage.
